Before I became a mom, I thought I understood what life with a baby would look like. Slower days, fewer outings, maybe a pause on “real” adventures. And I often wondered what’s the point of taking a baby anywhere? They won’t remember it anyway… right? A year later, I have a whole list of things to do with a baby in Southern California that proved me wrong.
But motherhood has a way of quietly changing everything you thought you knew.
Now that my son has turned one, I realize those early adventures weren’t really for him in the way I once expected. They were for us. For the version of me learning how to be a mom. For the way my husband and I learned to slow down and see the world differently. For the joy of watching us become a family in real time.
His first year went by faster than I ever imagined, and when I look back, it’s not just the big milestones I remember. It’s the in between moments the random outings, the weekend road trips, the quiet mornings away from home, and the way he experienced everything with brand new eyes.
If you're looking for ideas, here are the best things to do with a baby in Southern California, based on everything we loved during our son's first year.
1. A Cozy Christmas in Big Bear
When Axel was about four months old, we rented a beautiful Airbnb in Big Bear with my family for Christmas.

At that stage, traveling felt like stepping into a completely new version of life. Everything was slower, softer, and somehow more meaningful. We packed the baby carrier, walked around the village, played games at the cabin, and just soaked in the feeling of being together in a new way.
The funny part? It was December, and we were expecting cold mountain weather. Instead, it was almost 80 degrees. We packed sweaters, jackets, and all the cozy clothes, only to spend most of the trip trying not to melt. So my biggest tip is to always check the weather the day before you go. California has a way of keeping you on your toes.
Even with the unexpected heat, there was something really special about celebrating his very first Christmas in the mountains. It wasn’t just a trip it felt like the beginning of our new family traditions. It’s a memory I’ll always hold onto.
2. Visit an Aquarium With Your Baby
Around six months old, we took him to the aquarium, and I swear I’ve never seen him so fascinated.
Watching his little eyes follow the fish and colorful sea animals made the entire trip worth it.

We brought the stroller, but a baby carrier works just as well. My biggest tip? Go on a weekday if you can. It’s much less crowded, which makes the whole experience a lot more enjoyable.
3. Disneyland With a Baby
Will your baby remember Disneyland?
Probably not.
Is it cost effective?
Definitely not.

Would I do it again?
Absolutely.
We celebrated Axel turning six months by taking him to Disneyland with both grandmas, his aunts, and his uncles. It turned into a full family day, and those memories are priceless.
We didn’t go on every ride like we used to before becoming parents, but that’s okay. We slowed down, soaked it all in, and experienced Disney through his little eyes.
We loved it so much that we decided it’s something we want to do together every year.
4. The Los Angeles Zoo With a Baby
The LA Zoo ended up being one of our favorite outings.
We brought my mom and Axel’s uncles, packed our own snacks and lunch, and spent the day walking around.

It ended up being a pretty affordable day, especially if you bring your own food instead of buying everything inside.
Bonus, I got plenty of steps in without even realizing it.
5. A Beach Day in Southern California
How can you live in Southern California and not take your baby to the beach?
Especially during summer.
One thing I learned as a first time mom is that it’s really easy to overthink beach trips. You start packing like you’re moving there.
Yes, bring the essentials. But don’t stress about bringing every single baby item you own.
Sometimes all you need is a towel, some shade, snacks, sunscreen, and a willingness to go with the flow. Those simple beach days ended up being some of our favorites.
6. California Science Center (Free Admission)
The California Science Center might be my favorite budget friendly recommendation.
Admission is completely free.
Parking is around $20, and you can easily spend two or three hours exploring.
There is a beautiful garden to walk through, colorful exhibits, and plenty to keep curious little eyes entertained.
If you’re trying to get out of the house without spending a fortune, this is such a great option.
7. A Weekend in San Diego With a Baby
One of our favorite family trips was spending two nights in San Diego.
We stayed at the Hilton Tapestry Collection, and it was incredibly family friendly.

There were pools, an arcade room, ping pong tables, and plenty of space to walk around. It’s also super close to LEGOLAND, making it a great place to stay as your kids get older too.
We found amazing food, enjoyed slow mornings together, took long walks, and made some of my favorite memories from his first year.
Don’t Forget the Simple Days
As much as I loved every trip on this list, the moments I’ll probably cherish the most happened close to home.
Walking around the lake by our house.

Taking him to the neighborhood park.
Pushing him on the swings for the first time was such a cute moment!
Those ordinary mornings somehow became the most extraordinary memories.
Motherhood has taught me that babies don’t need expensive adventures.
They just want to be with you.
One Thing That Helped My Anxiety
People often ask how we managed to do so much with a baby.
The truth?
We didn’t over plan.
We went with the flow.
Some outings were easy. Some didn’t go as planned. Sometimes naps happened in the stroller, sometimes they didn’t.
The more we got out and lived our lives, the more confident I became as a mom.

If you’re nervous about taking your baby somewhere new, start small. You might surprise yourself. And if this season has you feeling a little lost, I wrote more about finding yourself again after motherhood.
Final Thoughts on Things to Do With a Baby in Southern California
If you’re in Southern California and trying to make the most of your baby’s first year, I hope this list gives you a few ideas.
Remember, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to create meaningful memories.
Your baby may not remember every adventure.
But you will.
And one day, you’ll look back at the photos, laugh about everything that went wrong, smile about everything that went right, and realize those ordinary little moments became some of the best days of your life.
